The much loved Vauxhall Insignia will step up into a more premium market with the addition of the Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport set to be launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and what’s even better is it won’t come at a huge price increase. The model will be driven towards the premium executive saloon market upon it’s arrival next year and will rival the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Volkswagen Passat to name a few.
The name Grand immediately reveals the new model will be larger and in turn more spacious than the current model and will be luxurious and well equipped. Whilst the model is going to grow in size, the use of new materials when building the Insignia Grand Sport means it will actually be lighter than the current Insignia by around 175kg in turn resulting in an improvement in both handling and the all important fuel economy of the vehicle.
The growth is likely to be by around six inches and the exterior aesthetics will lean towards a more coupe like styling with a long, low roof and slender hatchback rear but this has been combined with a more upright front giving an overall more executive look and feel. In terms of the overall design theme a lot of features from the 2013 Monza concept feature with this trend likely to follow suit over a whole host of new models over the next decade or so.
Around the front of the new Insignia Grand Sport the premium appearance comes from a combination of styling choices such as the thin, flat-fronted wings across the top of the grille which houses within it the brand’s badge as well as the Monza style air vents which sit below suave new slim OLED headlights which feature the latest in Matrix-beam technology; made up of 32 LED segments the lights will constantly adapt to driving conditions with different lighting patterns and will be able to light up to 400 metres down the road when full beams are in use.
Open the doors into this new luxury saloon and you’ll be greeted by large technology touchscreens, elegant materials as well as the award winning intelling OnStar system which offers a wealth of technology and safety features including 4G connectivity, your own personal assistant to assist with navigation and safety alerts direct to the emergency services in the event your vehicle is in an accident.
In terms of powertrains the model will feature revised, newer versions of the Whisper diesel engine options as well as potentially an Ampera style plug-in model down the line. As well as an eco-friendly option there is also the likelihood of a sportier VXR version which would offer additional trim levels and take on the likes of equivalent Audi S and BMW M Sport ranges.
