Your car is one of the most essential parts of your life, right?
It can be an emotional and stressful situation if you crash your beloved Vauxhall car, so that’s why, here at Drive, we want to make sure you know exactly what to do should you need any help after an accident.
Follow our step-by-step guide below to ensure you can be back in the road in no time!
1. Immediately Take Action
If a crash happens, it’s important to ensure you think quickly and calmly by stopping, turning off your engine and turning on your hazard lights. This makes it safe to check all passengers are safe and not harmed, before calling the police and an ambulance. Trying to keep calm and breath is essential as you will be in shock from such a shaking experience. If you are in an accident with another car, it is wise to not accept responsibility or apologise as it could affect your insurance claim later on.
2. Get All The Details
Once you’ve calmed down after a crash, you should record all information about the incident, in case you need it in the future. This includes:
· The make, model, colour, and number plates of all vehicles involved.
· The time and date.
· The weather, lighting, and road conditions.
· Any injuries caused from the incident.
· The names and details of any eye witnesses.
· Any immediate damage that has been made the vehicles involved.
3. Get Proof
A great way to record any accident and damage is to take photographs of the scene. This can include images of damage, number plates, injuries, the road conditions, the weather, and lighting. Evidence like this could be useful later when you make a claim and need to provide evidence to your insurer.
4. Make A Claim
If you’ve been in a crash you may decide to make a claim on your insurance for repairs from the damage. To do this, you need to have you policy number so you can check the terms of your insurance and arrange for any damage to be fixed. At this point, it’s necessary to draw on the information you collected at the scene, as if an accident has happened with another vehicle involved, you will need the other registration numbers, and drivers’ name and details.
5. If You Don’t Want To Claim
If you want to keep your No Claims Discount (NCD) intact, you don’t have to make a claim on your insurance. However, to stop your insurance from being cancelled, you still need to tell your insurer that you were in an accident. Before deciding to make up the costs on your own, you should keep in mind that your next insurance quote could still rise, even when your NCD is protected. It is always best to assess the damage and the costs before deciding whether to claim on insurance or not!
